Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on the 18th of July 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was born to white and black parents. She grew up on her mother's side. She stated that the color of her skin was the primary reason she felt at odds with her peers as when she was a young child. Their parents were struggling financially and had to relocate sixteen times in order to work for her father. Russell admitted that, despite the hardships, there was always the chance to reinvent yourself, to develop something new. Russell's parents had financial difficulties and she was constantly moving. At the age of 18, she took her first acting class, and finally found her place. She borrowed money from her job in order to purchase a car and drive to Los Angeles to audition. She would go back to work when her cash was gone, and then start making auditions again. That routine went on for four years until she was offered her first TV job.
